Copper Ghana necklace #280

This necklace uses two different kinds of beads from Ghana.  The striped beads are usually found in the Asante and Krobo tribal areas.  Some of the older ones of this type are becoming collectible.  The others are Abo (bauxite) beads  Look at the Jewelry Ingredient page to find out more about these beads.  Each bead is held in place by copper wire which was individually hand shaped.  The clasp is handcrafted with copper wire. 

It measures up to 19.5" (just under 50 centimeters).

This necklace features a jasper stone.  It has the most incredible shine.  It is mainly a buttery-creamy yellow swirling around a deep liver color.  The reddish liver color reminds me of the color of a typical dirt road in Africa.  It is wraped in copper wire and dangles from almost 2 inches of Ghanian Abo beads, then copper colored glass seed beads alternated with pale golden glass beads.  The free form clasp and link chain are hand made using copper wire.  It is strung on nylon coated steel wire for strength.  It measures 18.5 inches (47 centimeters) and extends with a chain to 19 3/4 inches (50 centimeters).

This necklace is made with 3 turquoise chunks and five turquoise beads.  The chunks are threaded with sterling silver wire and hung on chain.  There is a locked heart charm to dangle down your back.  It is strung on nylon coated steel wire for strength.  The length is adjustable up to 20 inches (51 centimeters).

It can also be wrapped round and round and worn as a bracelet.

This necklace features a rough turqoise chunk bead and has jade disk beads, turquoise beads and nickel ball beads.  The white beads were salvaged from a vintage necklace.  It has a sterling silver toggle clasp and is strung on nylon coated steel wire for strength.

This necklace casts a warm glow with a golden colored periwinkle shell found on the shores of Africa by the artist as the main feature.  It is copper wire wrapped and has four carved bone beads, freshwater pearls, copper-colored glass seed beads and tiny amber colored glass tube beads.  The necklace is strung using nylon coated steel wire for strength.  The clasp and chain are handmade using copper wire.

It measures 21 1/4 inches (54 centimeters) and expands to 22 inches (56 centimeters).
 

African Shell/Copper Wire Pendant Necklace #369

This necklace features a shell found on the shores of Africa by the artist.  Other than bore a tiny hole in the shell I have not altered it.  It looks as if it has been laquered inside, there is such a rich, thick shine.  This necklace - the shell in particular - is the color of Africa with her rich dark browns, earth reds and just a little bit of shimmery white for fun! 

It is made of seeds, goldstone (or sun sitara) beads (see jewelry ingredients page), copper colored glass seed beads, and two carved bone beads strung on nylon coated steel for strength.  It has a copper wire wrapped goldstone dangling inside the shell and a free form copper wire clasp and link chain holding an Abo (bauxite) bead. 

It measures 17 inches (43 centimeters) and lengthens with the chain to 18.5 inches (47 centimeters).
 

Alikreukel Door on Leather #370

This necklace features a rare beach find, an Alikreukel "door" held on to a leather strap by a free form design in copper wire.  The clasp s handmade using copper wire as is the free form swirl that dangles down your back from the chain.  The back of the door is as beautiful as the front, therefore was made to wear either way.  See the image below.

The alikreukel is a large sea snail eaten in Southern Africa.  It uses its "door" to seal itself inside its huge, round shell.

This necklace measures 17 inches (43 centimeters) and extends to 20 inches (51 centimeters) with the chain.

This necklace is made from a clam shell, known locally as a white mussell shell, found on the shores of Africa by the artist.  The shell has shimmery shades of yellow and very subtle purple hues.  It dangles under a row of strung seeds and chunky faceted yellow jade beads, which hang from a leather cord.  The clasp is handmade.  There are chips of amethysts and a yellow frosted glass bead which hangs down your back.
